Introducing new members of the UK rail team

Our UK business has welcomed a number of new recruits to its teams in recent months:

Upon the launch of Ricardo Rail on July 1st 2015, Shane McCauley (above) became our Global Product Services Director, based in Derby. Shane has worked at Ricardo since 2011 where, as Product Group Head of Drivelines & Transmissions, he oversaw the delivery of technical and engineering services to the rail industry, as well as to clients in the defence and marine sectors. Projects that he led included the development & installation of a new drive train for Scomi monorail vehicles. Shane is a Mechanical & Electrical engineer and has held with previous roles at ZF, David Brown Engineering, and with the Royal Navy.

Like Shane, Jim Buchanan (above) was also part of Ricardo’s original team serving the rail sector, and in July moved across to the new Ricardo Rail team as Global Products Manager for the UK, based in Derby. He is a Chartered Engineer with over 40 years’ experience in the rail industry as a rolling stock engineer with a specialism in diesel powertrain. Before joining Ricardo in 2010 Jim spent over 20 years at Brush Traction (now Wabtec) where he ultimately became Chief Mechanical Engineer, and was also Global Head of Rail Engineering at Cummins and Lead Power Equipment Engineer at Bombardier. 

Bill Graham is a Senior Consultant who joins us from the Rail Safety and Standards Board (RSSB). He’s worked on the railway for over 30 years, predominately in operations, safety and managing standards within organisations such as London Underground, British Rail, Railtrack and Network Rail. Bill specialises in the safety of signalling and operations and how it impacts on the railway system as a whole. As Project Manager, Bill led the production and amendments to the national Rule Book and Railway Group Standards, and was instrumental in the development of operations for the first implementation of ERTMS in the UK where he managed the operations readiness of the Cambrian route re-signalling. His involvement with ERTMS continued with managing the operational and safety elements for the establishment of an ERTMS test site and facility on part of the East Coast Main Line. Bill will be based in our Paddington office.

Derek Summers has joined us as Senior Consultant from EC Harris LLP. Derek has more than 29 years’ experience of High Integrity Systems Engineering for both safety and mission critical systems within the automotive, rail and aviation sectors.  Derek has particular experience in the assessment of the design and development of safety related and secure software for a variety of systems. He is also an experienced auditor of safety related and business critical systems’ development processes and has experience in the establishment of assurance regimes for railway projects. He will be based in our York office.

Francesco Cipullo joined Ricardo Rail as a Consultant having previously been  at Ansaldo STS, where he worked as a Project Lead RAMS engineer. Francesco is a RAMS engineer with experience in undertaking Hazard Identification activities, Hazard Log development, System Hazardous Failure Rate calculations, System Functional Hazard Analyses, Fault Tree Analyses, SIL Apportionment and Report development working for high speed rail systems, in compliance with European (CENELEC) and national standard. Francesco has relocated from Italy to the UK and will be based in our Derby office. 

Rowan Bell has joined Ricardo Rail as a Rolling Stock Consultant. Rowan is an Electrical Engineer with experience in rolling stock control and auxiliary systems, installation design of power equipment as well as AC/DC traction systems. He was previously at Interfleet Technology and has also been studying for a PhD at Nottingham University. Rowan will be part of the Midlands based Rolling Stock Consultancy team based in our Derby office.
