Following receipt of the required accreditation from our colleagues in Ricardo Certification, the new 'Sprinter Next Generation' (SNG) models were authorised to begin their test programme on the Dutch network in anticipation of their entry into service next year.
The trainsets were manufactured by Construcciones y Auxiliar de Ferrocarilles (CAF) and are based on CAF’s Civity platform for regional services.
Ricardo Certification was appointed as the independent and accredited party to assess compliance of the new vehicle against technical regulations in order to commence the testing stage in the autumn of 2017. This required expertise from Ricardo's teams across a wide range of technical areas, such as the electrical sub-systems, braking, environmental conditions and train safety systems.
The Certification teams are now supporting CAF with the management and planning of the test campaign. The measurements recorded by Ricardo's teams will also provide vital data about the vehicle's progress during the test runs.
The project remains on schedule and Dutch operator NS hopes to introduce three-car and four-car SNG sets for passenger service in late 2018.
Ricardo Certification is a separate and independent business within the Ricardo group that is accredited to provide assurance services by the relevant regulatory authorities. For more information about its work, visit certification.ricardo.com.
