A group of Ricardo colleagues have teamed up to take part in this year’s Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) Railway Challenge, an annual competition where young engineers design and build a narrow-gauge locomotive to compete against other locos in a series of trials over a summer weekend.
This year the challenge takes place on Saturday 30th June and Sunday 1st July at the Stapleford Miniature Railway, near Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire.
The Ricardo team (see below) is comprised of six rail engineers and three colleagues from the Ricardo Automotive business. After many months of design and procurement they have just started to assemble the loco at facilities close to our Derby offices. The team hope to have a working model by late February, which will then be ready for testing and further improvements in preparation for the contest. We wish them well.
Spectators are welcome to attend on either of the two days of the actual competition. Entrance is free, but visitors are asked to register in advance with the IMechE. For more information, see the Railway Challenge website: http://www.imeche.org/events/challenges/railway-challenge
Visitors will also have opportunities to travel on the Stapleford Miniature Railway ‘specials’ - a railway that is not usually open to the public.
