What is the Common Safety Method on Risk Evaluation and Assessment(CSM-RA)?
If you are involved with changes to the railway, you need to have an understanding of how to manage risks.
The European Commission Common Safety Method (CSM) on Risk Evaluation and Assessment Regulation (EU 402/2013 as amended by EU 2015/1136) provides a legal obligation and mandatory framework for the evaluation and assessment of risk associated with engineering, operational and organisational changes to the railway.
The objective of this training course is to provide delegates with an understanding of the CSM Regulation, the risk assessment framework, and guidance on implementation for engineering changes.

The course is comprised of two one-day units that can be run together or separately. It provides engineers, managers and others involved in safety-related projects, with a detailed understanding of the regulatory framework, their responsibilities and how they fit within the broader context of Engineering Safety Management principles and best practice.
Unit 1 - CSM overview and context
Unit 1 provides an introduction and overview of the Common Safety Method regulation, including its context within European and UK legislation and the broader aspects of Engineering Safety Management (ESM).
On its own, Unit 1 provides an overview of the regulatory framework, European and UK guidance, risk management principles and CSM. It also provides an update on CSM regulation for experienced practitioners who are already familiar with ESM.
Unit 2 - Implementing explicit risk estimation
Unit 2 is aimed at delegates who have already attended Unit 1, and provides greater detail on implementing risk assessment from first principles within the CSM framework.
Comprehensive guidance on implementation is provided throughout and all attendees will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience of the main techniques involved. This Unit is aimed at those new to rail risk assessment and also to more experienced practitioners requiring a refresher course on risk assessment within a CSM context.
The course content is supported by a range of documents that will serve as ideal reference material for future use.
Unit 1 delegates will receive a certificate of attendance. Unit 2 includes a multiple choice examination covering both Units 1 and 2, with a certificate issued to delegates who pass the examination. Alternatively, delegates may elect to receive a certificate of attendance.
The interactive course is delivered by experienced CSM practitioners, with lectures interspersed with practical exercises.
Both public and private courses are offered. The public course is scheduled to suit demand, and individual places can be booked by delegates. The private course is offered for a specific client and is typically delivered at their premises.
The course supports a maximum of 15 delegates.
