Etihad Rail is a 1200km passenger and freight network across the United Arab Emirates, stretching from the Arabian Gulf to the Indian Ocean.
As the Independent Safety Assessor (ISA) appointed by Etihad Rail PJSC, we are assessing safety at all stages of the railway’s development, from preliminary engineering and detailed design through to the start of freight services on stage one of the Etihad Rail Network, and then passenger and freight services during stages two and three.
This involves conducting full assessments and audits of:
- The engineering system’s safety plans, processes, activities and documentation during the design, manufacture, installation and testing phases.
- The establishment of the Operations and Maintenance Organisation and its safety management system, and its readiness to safely operate and maintain the Stage 1 railway during trial operations and eventual service.
The completed route will be mainly double-tracked and open to both passenger and freight use.
Passenger services are expected to reach speeds of up to 200km/h, while twin-stack container freight services will travel speeds of up to 120km/h.
The railway is expected to form the backbone of a national network that links the region’s primary industrial and commercial centres. It will also form part of the planned 2,000km Gulf Railway that will connect the member states of the Gulf Co-operation Council.
