Safety assessment of new Computer Based Interlocking system against international standards.

In April 2020, Ricardo was appointed independently assess and certify a new Computer Based Interlocking (CBI) system in anticipation of its release to a global market.

LTran IX2 CBI has been developed by LS ELECTRIC, an international supplier of automation equipment headquartered in Anyang, South Korea. 

An evolution of an existing CBI product (previously certified by Ricardo Certification in 2015), the new product includes several design changes to meet the requirements of a wider range of domestic and international markets. 

The changes included a redesigned Central Interlocking Unit (CIU), additional Ethernet interfaces and serial interfaces for communicating to adjacent CBIs, and revised application software.

Our role was to assess whether, following these changes, the safety functions of the LTran IX2 CBI 520V continued to achieve a Safety Integrity Level 4 (SIL4) against the latest EN 50126, EN 50128, and EN 50129 standards.

‚ÄčThough the Ricardo team were able to use certain aspects from their assessments of the original product, such were the changes introduced that a full appraisal of the new product's development cycle and final performance was required.

This meant fresh appraisals of key components such as the power supply, central processing unit board, interfaces, console and object controllers.

The certification process took 14 months to complete, concluding with a ceremony for LS ELECTRIC that saw the formal issue of certificates against EN 50126:2017, EN 50128:2011 and EN 50129:2018, meaning LTran IX2 CBI 520V met the highest possible safety requirements.

Now fully certified, the new product joins LS ELECTRIC’s portfolio of railway safety products available to its domestic market and to customers in regions such as the Middle East & Africa, South America, North and Central America.
